Pearls = Prosperity
The Oyster Farm model posits that, from a sociological perspective and drawing on concepts such as “Social Ecological Systems” (SES) and “Complex Adaptability” within an SES, that new innovative app technology can help facilitate an enormously beneficial framework that can strengthen local economic connectivity and foster more intentional economic interdependence and entanglement — both of which will be essential to keep local Boulder County businesses healthy and prosperous in the future. Membership in the Oyster Farm club allows for a new approach that facilitates and modernizes traditional one-off, one-to-one barter, enabling micro-bartering where the two halves of a barter transaction may take place at different times and involve different participants. This approach encourages (without using money) increased velocity and, crucially, retention of economic activity and value exclusively within the local community. At the same time, it boosts business cash liquidity, leading to improved financial benefits and stability. A win for the local economy, a win for local businesses, and a win for Individuals!
Attracting customers is fundamental to the success of any restaurant or retail business. Ensuring consistent foot traffic is the primary objective, as all subsequent economic opportunities stem from this necessary achievement. Under the theme “USE YOUR IMAGINATION NOT YOUR MONEY,” we present a selection of hypothetical scenarios of economic barter, micro-barter, and community connection through the Oyster Farm that create beneficial outcomes in economic value without using money. These illustrative examples are designed to reflect how individuals and businesses in the Boulder area might initially engage with and gradually increase their involvement in the Boulder Oyster Farm model. We encourage you to imagine other practical instances where B2B and micro-bartering with PEARLS could benefit both individuals and local enterprises. We would love to hear from you… so please feel free to submit your suggestions for possible inclusion in our compilation below.
Kicking-Off Community Participation Using PEARLS
In 1936, musician Norman Span (also known as King Radio) composed the song “MAN SMART, WOMAN SMARTER,” which was later made famous by the
Grateful Dead. In Boulder, nearly 70 businesses owned or operated by women are situated within a block of Pearl Street, stretching from 9th to
20th avenues. Many of these enterprises, guided by talented women, are active members of the Oyster Farm. As we launch this series of
fictional examples, we begin by highlighting some women-owned and managed businesses:
The owner of a Yoga Studio on Pearl Street found the Oyster Farm model compelling and chose to become acquainted with the Oyster Farm app and its
advantages. She began by joining the Oyster Farm and accepting PEARL barter units as payment for all accessory merchandise featuring the Yoga Studio
logo. Additionally, she leverages Oyster Farm's complimentary blast notifications to promote events, new membership subscription offers, and other
important announcements. She considers Oyster Farm membership, available at just $1 per month, to be excellent value, offering substantial benefits
with minimal risk.

Boulder boasts around 68 yoga studios, and the owner of the Pearl Street Yoga studio loves staying in tune with the energy flowing through the broader yoga community. She recently attended a PEARL PALS meet-up at a popular North Boulder coffee shop, where the group discussed living a holistic, connected lifestyle and weaving micro-yoga into daily routines. While waiting to order her drink, she picked up a new large wicker purse for her towel and yoga gear, an appealing bag of Ethiopian coffee grounds, and a large, scented candle. She paid for everything at this coffee shop using her accumulated PEARL barter units from accessory sales at her yoga studio.
The owner of Mindy's, a well-known deli on Pearl Street in Boulder, announced that she will begin accepting PEARL barter units for certain low-cost perishable items, mainly soups and salads. This means customers who want just soup or salad can use PEARL barter units. Mindy also introduced a creative new practice: she sends out Oyster Farm blast notifications about an hour before closing, listing other additional deli items specials that can be micro-bartered for Pearls. She appreciated the win-win situation—reducing food waste at the end of the day and supporting the Oyster Farm model. Mindy was also very surprised by the final hour surge responding to the deals for PEARLS. Additionally, she liked being able to use Oyster Farm blast notifications for advertising, even when Pearls weren't accepted in the transaction.

Mindy has started using the Oyster Farm in a remarkable and ideal way, embracing its cashless system for retail business transactions with special deli promotions daily. She uses the PEARLS she earns to pay for her CPA, who looks after both her bookkeeping and tax returns. Conveniently, his office sits just one block away on Pearl Street. He often orders lunch for his team from Mindy's restaurant or sometimes goes out by himself to enjoy a deli sandwich and watch people at the mall. Every item on Mindy's menu can be bought with PEARLS by this CPA firm.
A local hair salon owner has decided to join the Oyster Farm, initially agreeing to accept PEARL barter units once per year from regular clients who visit at least ten times annually, with plans to potentially increase acceptance of PEARLS over time. Several hair stylists have also expressed interest in participating in the Oyster Farm on an individual basis, offering to accept PEARLS for gratuities. The salon owner utilizes blast notifications to inform the community about important updates, such as the hiring of new stylists and their areas of expertise, upcoming monthly wine and cheese afternoons, product promotions, trunk shows, and other special events, contributing to the salon's reputation as one of the most highly regarded establishments in town.

At the crew's request, she pays the nighttime cleaning staff entirely in PEARLS. Their workday begins at 4:00pm, and they clean several
nearby businesses and office spaces late into the night. Although most places compensate them traditionally in dollars, the cleaners
prefer PEARLS so that they can enjoy PEARLS SNACK HOURS (2:00-4:00PM) at the local pub, where only PEARLS are accepted for menu side items
during that window. This works out perfectly, allowing them to grab a snack before their evening shift.
*Refer to the eighth illustrative example below.
A locally owned flower shop near Pearl Street has joined the Oyster Farm and now accepts PEARLS in specific, negotiated transactions. For instance, the shop has arranged to barter with a well-known, locally owned downtown hotel, accepting PEARL barter units from the hotel in exchange for providing a fresh floral arrangement each week for the hotel lobby.

The owner of this flower shop began her first barter arrangement and transaction by providing a weekly grand floral display in the lobby of Boulder's top locally owned downtown hotel, resulting in an engaging and mutually beneficial relationship. She uses her acquired PEARLS at the hotel spa, which participates in the Oyster Farm movement by accepting PEARLS in some aspects of the hotel operations. All her spa treatments and annual membership are paid with PEARLS barter units. Over time, her partnership with the hotel has grown, including a special agreement to supply flowers for hotel guests during events like weddings, proms, showers, graduations, and holiday parties. Additionally, she spends her accumulated PEARLS at the hair salon across the street, creating a dynamic triangle of genuine economic activity in the neighborhood without relying on traditional money!
A coffee shop located in North Boulder serves as a popular morning “hot spot” destination within the local community. It is run by a woman who
is a hip bundle of positive energy and creativity. While the drinks are superb and the social scene as lively as it can get in the early
morning hours, there is something additionally unique about the place that provides an added competitive advantage when it comes to coffee
shops. It's actually enjoyable to wait in line and browse the wide selection of unique and creative crafts that line the wall for sale! It
turns out her creativity extends even further now as she decided to join the Oyster Farm with an initial commitment to accept PEARL barter
units for all the arts and crafts for sale against the wall. She has also designated the last hour of the day before closing “PEARL HOUR”
which has (not) surprisingly created a new afternoon crowd. She accepts only PEARL barter units during this final hour of the day before
closing. The Oyster Farm has also utilized this ideal setting she has created as a preferred location for many of the pop-up groups* they
schedule. Creating a new afternoon buzz and economic benefit prior to closing.
* Pop-up groups are Pearl Pal meet-ups that are scheduled last minute and based on/ triggered by/ climatic or emotional events/moments that
might be experienced within the community. For example, Who Shot JR? Did Tony Soprano die after the final episode? Who survived the snap at
the end of the Avengers Infinity War and what will they do? A new Pokémon just appeared in Boulder Colorado! You get the picture…

With the overall decline of cash transactions in today's economy, there is less physical currency circulating among individuals. As a result, some service earners such as valets, street performers, and gig delivery workers are increasingly impacted by this shift. For these types of services, the Oyster Farm app's digital tipping functionality offers an effective solution to address this challenge. One of the street performers that always attracts a big crowd started accepting Pearls as tips as well.

Transactions That Help Businesses
The premier locally owned downtown hotel joined the Oyster Farm and sent out a blast notification saying they would accept Oyster Farm PEARL barter units from other Boulder County business owners for any spa treatment or spa membership. This new flow of local Boulder County business owners going to the hotel spa has created several unexpected benefits that include more holiday parties, company events, weddings etc. from the local business owner community. These business owners have also created a huge local word of mouth giving a lift to the hotel spa and has created a new symbiotic relationship between local business owners in Boulder County and all of the offerings at this favorite hotel. Management has also notified the Oyster Farm that the hotel would welcome PEARL PALS meet-up groups in their lobby and on their patio. We obliged and scheduled a recent Oyster Farm PEARL PALS event in the hotel lobby and the place became as lively as a casino during a recent “Mahjong” game night.

A well-known tavern on Pearl Street has recently experienced the effects of reduced alcohol sales, reflecting a broader cultural shift toward
health consciousness that is impacting the earnings of all bars and restaurants.* Recognizing the organic truth of “adapt-or-die” the owners
know that achieving a prosperous (profitable) business requires getting people into the tavern and making it their home away from home.
Historically, the proprietors of this tavern have astutely recognized the necessity of flexibility and innovation as social dynamics change
with the times. Consequently, they introduced and promoted "PEARLS SNACK HOURS" via blast notifications, scheduled between 2-4pm—traditionally
the least busy period of the day—offering values superior to typical happy hour incentives. During these hours, PEARLS are accepted for all
side orders on the menu; most side orders on the menu have minimal costs**, making the economic proposition highly beneficial. Providing
low-cost side items in exchange for PEARLS during this timeframe has resulted in a natural spillover into the happy hour window, subsequently
increasing revenue in both dollars and PEARLS. The positive results from this initiative have prompted further consideration of expanding
micro-bartering participation.

** Side items such as pasta, beans, etc. only cost pennies per serving in bulk and are a highly effective way to fill the place between lunch
hours and evening happy hour.

Another favorite pub located beneath Pearl Street joined the Oyster Farm to send out blast notifications whenever a pool table, shuffleboard table, or dart board opened up during the busiest evening hours. The owners were pleasantly surprised when Oyster Farm blast notifications fostered what they called a “smart community” of regulars who would dine nearby and then head downstairs to the pub as soon as they received an alert that a game table or board was available.

Still yet another popular late-night establishment on Pearl Street has joined the Oyster Farm after recognizing the benefits of increased publicity regarding its distinctive series of game rooms, which are found winding several levels down to the basement bar. PEARL PAL events such as card games and other unique games have become better organized and scheduled on the app as well as targeted blast notification reminders. While this business has not yet adopted micro-bartering, they appreciate that, for just one dollar per month, they can send out announcements when games are scheduled or commence.

Walnut Hall is an upscale food court and community hub highly regarded by both the local adult community and university students during the academic term. Many PEARL PALS meet-ups are held at this location due to its ideal open layout and consistent availability of tables even when busy, which allows participants to enjoy food and beverages independently if they wish during the meet-up. The owners love the PEARL PALS meet-up groups that are often scheduled at Walnut Hall during the less busy days early in the week and accept PEARLS barter units for anything offered at the desert stand.

Business-To-Business (B2B) Bartering
A popular confectionary bakery in Boulder has joined the Oyster Farm to simplify its ongoing relationship with a respected local coffee roastery by using the Oyster Farm ledger. Previously, the bakery bought freshly roasted, seasonal coffee grounds each day, while the café purchased fresh pastries and breakfast items from the bakery. Now, these transactions are more efficiently executed and managed with Oyster Farm PEARLS as part of a cashless business-to-business (B2B) barter transaction—a mutually beneficial model that many other wholesale businesses and restaurants in the region have adopted through the Oyster Farm.

Taco Ted's is regarded as one of Boulder's leading casual dining establishments. The local owner is highly respected for his dedication and support of the local economy and notable generosity within the community, consistently engaging in initiatives that extend beyond his routine business operations. His expertise in business has facilitated mutually beneficial solutions, such as cashless bartering of surplus food inventory within a restaurant coalition he organized, enabling multifaceted support among members. Participants have benefited from business-to-business (B2B) barter transactions, which are easily captured and recorded in the Oyster Farm ledger. Utilizing PEARLS barter units to trade excess food and beverages has reduced economic earnings slippage, benefiting the collaborating restaurants. Additionally, the group is evaluating opportunities for collective bulk purchasing to secure greater discounts, subsequently dividing the goods efficiently through cashless barter among themselves.

Sunrise Bread is renowned for producing the freshest and most delicious bread in Boulder, consistently attracting customers who queue outside
the front door prior to opening each morning. They supply freshly baked bread not only to the morning retail customers in the community but
also to some of Boulder's finest restaurants in the afternoon prior to the evening dinner crowds. They avoid using the cash liquidity of their
business by accepting PEARLS barter units in many transactions.
Sunrise also barters with a local soup company that makes and delivers the best soups in town to both individuals and restaurants. This also gives
the local soup entrepreneur an effective and logical retail outlet as Sunrise Bread offers a whole retail display dedicated to this fresh soup.
They track and account for all the transactions with the soup company on the oyster farm ledger and have never once drained any of their cash liquidity
in these mutually beneficial barter transactions.

Creative Cashless Economic Opportunities
A semi-retired mechanic in Longmont loves the principles of the Oyster Farm and has established an innovative car repair system within his
community. His extensive training, technical expertise, and decades of experience form the foundation of this unique approach, which
frequently involves bartering his services. Recognizing the financial strain faced by car owners due to dealership repair costs and
unsatisfactory service experiences, he has implemented a process that enables clients with flexible schedules to benefit from reduced repair
expenses.
With the availability of more affordable automotive parts from international sources online, many individuals are opting to procure discounted components
themselves, thus avoiding traditional dealership pricing. The mechanic operates from a barn situated on his property, focusing exclusively on repairs
for vehicles with clearly identified issues when the required parts are supplied by the owner. He does not conduct diagnostic evaluations or accept
scheduled appointments.
A parking space adjacent to the barn, accompanied by a flag indicator, signals availability: a green flag and vacant spot denote readiness for new
work, while a red flag indicates ongoing repairs. Clients may leave their vehicle, along with the necessary parts, if the green flag is displayed.
Upon completion, the mechanic will notify the owner via text message. Compensation is solely accepted in the form of PEARLS barter units in the
Oyster Farm App.

A long-time realtor in Boulder who has lived through many economic cycles loves the idea of keeping cashless economic activity ricocheting around Boulder County. While this realtor has been successfully focused on the high end of the home market, there are occasionally times that his network, relationships and prior clients (and their children) ask for help/assistance with apartment hunting. Driven by an interest in advancing the Oyster Farm model in Boulder, this realtor has chosen to get involved by starting to accept commissions for apartment rentals in PEARLS properties he successfully closes. We hope that his support will ultimately lead to a big barter transaction someday where a home is is bartered for an equivalent valued item such as a business for sale or something else big we have not yet imagined!

There is a small Boulder family-owned private bank and trust located just west of the CU campus on Broadway. While it has operated with a traditional deposit and loan type model for over a hundred years, the next generation of family members that are up and coming to run the bank have developed a more modern view of the world given all the evolutions in finance since the days of simple deposits and lending around the local mining operations when the bank was founded. One of the owners' children, now a manager at the bank, has studied the evolution of blockchains and the crypto markets to understand how it might affect the family business in the future. He also joined the Oyster Farm to study what he found to be the intriguing concept of app based micro- barter to contain local economic activity for the benefit of our own regional economy in Boulder. How did he test the Oyster Farm model? He created “PEARLS PARKING” and on CU Buffs game days, he sends out blast notifications to Oyster Farm members that parking is available in the banks parking lot for 25 Pearls and has filled the lot at every home game. He's out there with the flag waving them in… We also think he is smartly testing the model and experiencing the future of a new reformed capitalism!
